Lake of Shkodra is located along Albania and Montenegro’s shared border. The beautiful shore consists of marshes in the north and rocky shores in the south, with two notable beaches located at Shiroka and Zogaj. The southern part of the lake is called “the hither coast,” while the northern part is called “waterfront.” There are several villages nearby which are attractive to tourists, such as Kosani, Flaka, Kamnica, Jubica and Kalldrun. The lake is home to a tremendous variety of living creatures, including 45 species of fish and 281 species of birds.
The most important monument to visit in Shkodra is the Rozafa Castle, which rises from a rocky hill to the west of Shkodra. The waters of three rivers, Buna, Drini and Kiri, surround it. Rozafa is one of the major castles in Albania and the most important tourist attraction in Shkodra. The castle dates back to the Illyrians, when the Latin historian Titus Livius named it “the stronghold of the Labeates,” an Illyrian tribe on the shores of Shkodra Lake . The Illyrian queen, Teuta, used it as a base in the war against Rome.
The small alluvial island of Franz Joseph is located at the outfall of river Buna on the border between Albania and Montenegro . It can changes to peninsula, depending what river can bring with it. This is a natural object of a great importance for the vegetation and sea birds that are found in this area. The vegetation is typically one of groves with dominations of poplars and other leaf trees. Seagulls dominate the sea birds in this area. Franc Joseph is recommended for people that love nature and prefer relaxing away from the civilization sounds.
